Opinion Writing.

What is the class?

Opinion Writing is a class formerly offered at the University of Memphis, but due to Prof. Otis Sanford's retirement, the class is no longer offered. The class was one of many upper-level writing courses in the JRSM program and centered on, well, laying out and writing opinion pieces in a journalistic way. The assignments in the class included various editorials on current events both nationally and in Memphis, longer opinion column pieces and various other assignments, the most pertinent for this page being the movie review assignment. No matter how you look at it, Opinion Writing was a standout class in the department and I'm sad to see it go.

Role in the history of EAT YOUR MAKEUP.

"You can't review your favorite movie." The only requirement we were given for the movie review assignment, we cannot review our favorite movies. There goes a lot of my ideas I had in mind, so it's time to plunge into something new. Though I was a little disappointed that I couldn't review LOVE EXPOSURE for the assignment, seeing as it is one of my favorite films, I remembered the director of that film, Sion Sono, had a miniseries on Netflix I had been meaning to see, THE FOREST OF LOVE: DEEP CUT. Intrigued, I binge-watched the series in the span of a night and immediately wrote my review the very next morning. I waited eagerly for the feedback and I wasn't disappointed with what I had gotten back. Here was a movie review I had written being praised by the king of opinion journalism in Memphis, the very same semester I was starting up and testing my own film review radio show! I took that feedback to heart, such as expanding more on my points and learning to not be overly floral and gushing of praise in my reviews, and modeled my earliest episodes on that feedback and Prof. Sanford's opinion pieces. Though that review is short, it is a piece I hold in very high regard and for the first time ever, I am making it available for you all to read here.
